Senior Nira Rahman ’20 (Lehman) is an Environmental Science major who is making sure that natural disasters don’t paralyze New York City. Last summer, she worked in the Mayor’s Office of Resiliency  synthesizing flood-related data into a series of maps communicating the impact of flooding and need for streamlined data collection. She created outreach materials on the National Flood Insurance Program, presented to council members, city agencies, and the public.

Nira is thrilled to be continuing that work: “I was rehired for the Fall and Spring terms to continue work on this initiative and to contribute to the broader goal of increasing the people’s resiliency to the impacts of climate change,” she says.

Nira will graduate from Macaulay and Lehman in June, and is applying to the Master’s program in Geographic Information Sciences at Lehman, the CUNY Civil Service Pathways fellowship, and the Columbia Bridge to PhD program for underrepresented students in research-related work, a two-year research assistantship. In the meantime, Nira enjoys trying new cuisines, crocheting, and reading mystery novels.
